May 18, 1889: Thomas Midgley Jr., American industrial chemist was born. Good News: He was primarily responsible for four important advances in field of chemistry: discovering effective antiknock additives for gasoline; developing practical process for extraction of bromine from seawater; advancing knowledge of vulcanization of rubber and composition of both natural & synthetic rubbers; and developing nonflammable gases for use in refrigeration & air-conditioning. As a result of his endeavors, he was awarded all four of the major American medals for achievements in chemistry. Bad News: Midgley never made any environmental life-cycle analysis for his invention of tetra ethyl lead (TEL) & Freon chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s). One historian remarked that Midgley “had more impact on the atmosphere than any other single organism in earth history.”

May 18, 1980: Inert rock & volcanic gases became extremely hazardous when Mount St. Helens in Washington State erupted, 57 people died. Millions of trees were demolished by 24-megaton blast in 230-square-mile area. In matter of seconds, volcano went from 9,600 feet high to only 8,300 feet high. Mountain top glacier melted creating massive mudslides that wiped out homes & dammed up rivers. Falling ash clogged carburetors & thousands of motorists were stranded.

May 18, 1977: Nightclub fire in Cincinnati, Ohio where 164 people died.

May 18, 1974: India detonated its first nuclear fission weapon. It became sixth nation with nuclear warhead capability joining United States, Soviet Union, Great Britain, China & France. Month later India’s rival, Pakistan, detonated its first nuclear weapon.

May 18, 1933: President Roosevelt signed “New Deal” Legislation creating Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to control floods, improve navigation, & generate electrical power. For many years, TVA has been proactive supporter of CHMM Program.

May 18, 1921: Typhus exposure shut down Ellis Island, 1,700 immigrants quarantined. After several days of fumigation & extensive cleaned up, it reopened for immigration.

May 18, 1918: TNT factory exploded in Oakdale, Pennsylvania where 200 people died.

May 18, 1914: First commercial cargo began its passage through the Panama Canal, which has become a major transportation corridor for hazardous and non-hazardous materials.

Congratulations to Lee Ellmaker, E.I.T. He joined MECX in 2012 as an environmental engineer in our corporate headquarters located in Houston, Texas. Mr. Ellmaker will be supporting MECX’s due diligence and remediation services nationally. Prior to joining MECX, Mr. Ellmaker performed a broad range of environmental and design engineering services in support of military test facilities. His “can-do” personality is a natural fit with MECX’s drive to solve the most challenging problems.

May 17, 1883: Svante Arrhenius, Swedish scientist developed ideas for his dissociation theory during a sleepless night. His theory explains that substances like salt (sodium chloride) when dissolved in water, dissociate (separate) into electrically charged ions (positive sodium ions & negative chloride ions). This idea was controversial at first, but is now a basic fact in understanding chemistry of ionic compounds.

May 17, 2005: Toyota Motor Company announced plans to produce gasoline-electric hybrid powered Camry sedan. Result was quantum leap in automotive fuel efficiency & carbon footprint reduction.

May 17, 1994: Fire broke out in overcrowded Honduras prison where 103 inmates died. Fire started from two small refrigerators in prison designed to house 800 inmates that was holding 2,000 prisoners. Guards reported that they had to fire their guns in air to keep prisoners from attacking firefighters & escaping. Inmates claimed that guards were preventing prisoners from fleeing the fire.

May 17, 1749: Edward Jenner, English surgeon who discovered vaccination for smallpox was born. He called his treatment method vaccination, using Latin word vacca, meaning cow, and vaccinia, meaning cowpox. Jenner also introduced the word virus.

Note: May 17 is World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, which is dedicated to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide. LinkedIn IHMM Discussion Group Site is a social media example of worldwide telecommunication & information now being made available to professionals that practice hazardous materials management.

May 15, 1896: F5 tornado (its winds exceeded 260 mph) struck Sherman Texas, 73 people died. Tornado strength is measured via Fujita Scale, named after Tetsuya Fujita. He discovered that average tornado is 150 feet wide, travels one mile moving 40 mph & tends to pick up strength the longer it lasts. Fujita found that only 30 percent of twisters reach winds above 112 miles per hour. Tornadoes that cause complete destruction on ground are designated as F5, which only occur in North America. There were 94 recorded F5 tornadoes in 20th century.

May 15, 1957: First British H-bomb exploded over Christmas Island in Pacific Ocean.

May 15, 1941: First British jet aircraft flew over England. Its jet engines were devised by Frank Whittle, British aviation engineer & pilot who is regarded as “father of the jet engine”. Jet age travel has dramatically changed transportation of hazardous materials.

May 15, 1940: Nylon stockings from DuPont (nylon was invented in 1935 by Wallace Carothers) went on general sale for first time in United States. Since then nylon has found thousands of other uses. DuPont marketing slogan was “Better Living Through Chemistry”!

May 15, 1859: Pierre Curie, French physical chemist was born. His studies of radioactive substances were made together with his wife, Marie Curie. Their success was achieved under conditions of extreme hardship. They had barely adequate laboratory facilities & worked under stress of having to do much teaching in order to earn their livelihood. Together, they discovered radium & polonium.
